There had been years of rumors going around before this moment, essentially turning the big announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 into something more of a “finally!” than an exciting moment. one. Yes, Nintendo has officially announced the successor to the Nintendo Switch, and it’s going to be called… Well, it’s the Nintendo Switch 2.
The reveal trailer was somewhat understated. It depicts the existing Nintendo Switch evolving like Pokémon. The screen is larger, the Joycons have new buttons, and more magnetic strips to make them easier to secure to the main console.
In fact, the trailer doesn’t go into much detail about what’s inside, so the video almost makes it look like it’s a new version of the Switch, just like the Switch OLED or Switch Lite. Only when the words “Nintendo Switch 2” appear does it become clear that this is a new machine.
Nintendo plans to give the Switch 2 a proper look at its Nintendo Direct event on April 2nd. The Switch 2 itself is expected to release this year, with a more precise release date expected once it’s properly revealed in April.
But we did get a few other details. Nintendo said the new console will work with original Switch titles, both digital and physical. However, it does state that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” This could simply be the company giving itself some leeway in case a few games don’t work, or it could be a sign that some of its existing library won’t remain intact. More details will be released later on the Nintendo website.
There was only one game that actually ran on the new console, but it was a very interesting one. It was the new Mario Kart. Considering that Mario Kart 8 continues to sell a ton of copies and frequently ranks high on the sales charts, I’m starting to genuinely wonder if they’ll ever make a proper sequel.
So here we are. Switch 2 is real and not called Super Switch. I think this is a truly baffling decision. How do you feel about it being revealed? Personally, I have to admit to various leaks. Even though I haven’t read them or covered them much, I think Switch 2 was already a reality, which killed my excitement for the reveal.
