“After 17 years of professional cricket, I have announced my retirement from the sport. This decision marks the end of an incredible chapter in my life and the beginning of a new adventure,” said Worker, who began his professional career with Central Districts and finished in Auckland. “I have made some great friendships throughout my career that will last a lifetime and memories that I will cherish forever.”
Overall, he scored 6721 runs in 169 A-list games with 18 centuries and 37 half-centuries at an average of 43.64 and a strike rate of 79.85. His first-class (6400 runs at an average of 29.49) and T20 (3480 runs at a strike rate of 123.57) figures were less impressive.
Walker, a part-time left-arm spinner, finished with 58 first-class wickets, 60 in A-list cricket and 42 in T20s.
“His tremendous leadership and experience will be greatly missed in the Aces environment, but we are incredibly excited for him as he embarks on the next chapter of his career,” Auckland Cricket’s head of performance and talent Evan Jones said. “Of course, George will remain a vital part of the Auckland Cricket family and we look forward to what that holds for the future.”
The near future is far from cricket.
“As I close this chapter, I am excited to begin the next phase of my life with Forsyth Barr, who have provided me with a fantastic opportunity,” Worker said. “I look forward to bringing the same passion and dedication to my new role with them.”
