In 2022, Adam Sandler signaled that he was working on a sequel to his 1996 comedy Happy Gilmore. The film finds Sandler’s title character’s hockey talents giving him an incredible advantage on the golf course. With the help of his mentor, Derick “Chubbs” Peterson (Carl Weathers), Happy improved his golf skills and calmed his violent personality. Now, Happy Gilmore is finally set to return with a new sequel on Netflix.
Netflix announced Happy Gilmore 2 in an advance presentation, via The Hollywood Reporter. The streamer later shared the news online.
Sandler is writing the script with Tim Herlihy, but there’s no word on whether the director is already attached to the film. It is also unknown whether other actors from the previous work will appear. Earlier this year, Christopher McDonald, who plays Happy’s rival Shooter McGavin, said Sandler showed him the first draft of the sequel. Sandler previously told Variety that the sequel will feature Happy as a member of the PGA Senior Tour. Last month, Sandler appeared on The Dan Patrick Show and gave an update on the current situation.
“We’re working on it. Me and (Tim) Herlihy are working diligently to create a great reason for everyone to come and watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about that,” he said. “We’re working on it. We have good ideas. We already have a million ideas. All we have to do is make it into a movie. We love Happy Gilmore. We don’t want to disappoint anyone. We’re going to work hard and make sure it’s good. “I’ll make sure you come out.”
Sandler’s Happy Madison production company has had a multi-film deal with Netflix since 2016. The resulting projects include The Ridiculous 6, Sandy Wexler, Murder Mystery, and its sequel, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat. Mitzvah and Spaceman. Sandler also produced a stand-up comedy special for Netflix, Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh, and plans to do another in the future.
