Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic has mentioned two things Ruben Amorim urgently needs to do to take his first steps at Old Trafford.
United confirmed the appointment of Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s successor on November 1.
He arrived at the club on Monday to officially take up his new role. A day later Amorim was pictured meeting some of the players including Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo, Toby Collyer and Mason Mount.
Amorim has certainly had his work cut out for him, with United currently sitting 13th in the Premier League with just 15 points from a possible 33.
Vidic, who won 15 trophies with United, told Sky Sports that Amorim must recruit players properly and foster positive relationships with players, media and club insiders.
The former Serbia international said of Amorim to Sky: “I don’t know much about him. (But) obviously I know he was very successful at Sporting Lisbon.”
“He seems like a very positive person and I think he has a winning mentality. He played at the highest level. He was a decent player. He has a good background.”
“But for me, what managers and coaches need in modern football is, above all, good recruitment and the ability to deal with players, media and even people at the club. “I hope he is the perfect fit for the club.”
“We need to get the work done over the next few transfer windows,” Vidic said. “I think they should definitely try to find new teams for some of the players, as well as the players they are recruiting.”
When asked about United’s decision to sack Ten Hag, Vidic responded: “It’s hard to say whether that’s right or not. But certainly we must say that Erik Ten Hag has received support from the club over the years. “The club invested a lot of money in Tenhag’s philosophy, and when I saw the results, my expectations and those of the fans were much higher.”
“But I’m not sure it’s just the coach’s problem. I think we need to look at the bigger picture. Other things need to be in place to help coaches achieve the best of their abilities. Sometimes you don’t need the best player in the world to play for a club, you need the right character.”
The 43-year-old explained that consistency is key when playing for the biggest club in the world.
United are back in action on November 24 when they travel to Portman Road to face Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.
