Lincoln, Nevada — Nebraska plans to begin selling alcohol at Memorial Stadium in 2025 if the university’s Board of Regents gives approval at its next meeting.
The proposal is on the agenda for the October meeting next Friday in Kearney, first reported by The Omaha World-Herald.
Nebraska became the last of 18 Big Ten schools to sell alcohol at football games. Northwestern, Wisconsin, Michigan and Michigan State began selling alcohol in their stadiums this year.
The Nebraska proposal would allow sales at all athletic events on the three campuses with athletic programs. A portion of the proceeds will be earmarked for alcohol abuse education and/or services.
An Associated Press survey of power conference schools and Notre Dame found that as of last November, 55 of 69 schools sold alcohol in public areas of their stadiums on game days. That number will now be at least 57 when Northwestern and Wisconsin announce they will sell regular seating spaces this summer.
Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen did not immediately return a message for comment.
Former athletic director Trev Alberts said Memorial Stadium, now 101 years old, does not have the proper infrastructure to accommodate a sale in 2022. Alberts said alcohol probably won’t be available for purchase until the stadium is renovated.
Plans for a major renovation have been put on the back burner, but Dannen told the World-Herald that necessary upgrades to alcohol sales will be made after this football season.
