Sen. Tom Cotton (R) dodged a question from ‘Meet the Press’ host Christine Welker on Sunday about whether Donald Trump lost the 2020 election.
“I would like to ask this question to the Senator to put this matter to rest. “Can we say right here and now that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election?” Welker asked.
“Christine, Joe Biden was elected president in 2020. It was an unfair election in many ways.” “I’m a big fan,” Cotton said of that year’s election, in which the 2024 Republican candidate recently conceded defeat after years of pushing.
Cotton’s comments come after the former president’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), refused to answer a similar question from Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz during last week’s vice presidential debate in what Welker described as a “big” moment. It will.
Vance, who previously falsely claimed Trump won that year’s election, responded that he was “focused on the future,” which Walz called a “horrific non-response.” Vance later defended himself by claiming the media was “obsessed with talking” about that year’s election.
On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also appeared on ABC’s “This Week” and described the 2020 election issues as part of a “game of catch.”
In his interview with Welker, Cotton argued that the 2020 election was unfair “on many levels.”
“So obviously Joe Biden was elected president. We know one of the reasons why,” the senator said before Welker interjected.
“But Trump lost? Just—” she asked.
“Joe Biden was elected, Christine.” Cotton said.
He continued, “There is a process to select the president. There is a vote in November. You have electoral college votes. You certify the election. And then there’s the inauguration ceremony. Joe Biden has been elected president. As a result, everything went to hell in a handbasket.”
Welker noted that the 2020 election was “one of the most secure elections” in U.S. history.
“But don’t you want to say Trump lost? How about putting it simply:” Welker said.
“Christine –” Cotton said.
“If Biden were president, could you simply say, ‘Did Trump lose?’” Welker asked.
“Joe — Joe Biden won the presidency in 2020,” Cotton responded, before claiming that this year’s primary was “very irregular” and declaring that President Trump and the Republican National Committee are focused on “election integrity” in 2024. .
