The timing couldn’t be more perfect. This year marks My Melody’s 50th anniversary and Kuromi’s 20th anniversary. What better way to celebrate than by bringing these beloved characters to life in a stunning stop-motion world? The series invites viewers to explore Mariland, a vibrant and delightful universe handcrafted down to the smallest detail. Take a peek and the stop-motion design is so cute you might find yourself reaching for it through the screen. It’s a visual style that’s both fresh and nostalgic, perfectly fitting the timeless charm of Sanrio.
My Melody vs Kuromi: Competition of the Heart
Fans know and love My Melody as the sweet, cookie-baking girl next door who cares deeply about her family. Since her debut in 1975, she has captivated fans across generations as a symbol of positivity and kindness. On the other side is the rebellious yet lovable ‘rival’ Kuromi. Arriving on the scene in 2005, Kuromi brought a punk rock attitude to Sanrio’s pastel world. But don’t be fooled by her bold appearance. She’s as sentimental as My Melody, and her balance of sass and sweetness has made her a fan favorite. (In fact, it is in the top 3 of the 2024 Sanrio Character Rankings!)
Behind the Scenes: A Dream Team of Creators
magical My Melody & Kuromi Critically acclaimed creative genius Tomoki Misato brought this work to life. Chicken Chicken Molkar. Misato’s passion for the project shines through as he shares his excitement. “This momentous project motivated us all to come together to tackle a variety of challenges and push the boundaries with stop motion. We hope everyone enjoys the exciting story set in Maryland that we created, thrilling action that goes beyond the limits of stop motion, and cute, dynamic characters.”
He is joined by award-winning screenwriter and playwright Shuko Nemoto. He wrote the series during the pandemic and added her unique touch to the series. Nemoto recalled the experience at the time and said, “I felt rewarded as a writer when My Melody and Kuromi spoke the lines I wrote.” Due to the pandemic, we were unable to meet director Misato or the producers in person. But we connected remotely every week and carefully built it together. This is a project filled with love for the world of My Melody, loved by all age groups. I believe that everyone, from adults to children, has their favorite scenes and lines.”
The series was produced by TORUKU, a division of WIT Studio, making its debut in the world of stop-motion animation. Known for its visually stunning work, WIT Studio is no stranger to bold, creative challenges. My Melody & Kuromi This is no exception.
