Inside Out 2 has been the animated film of the year for me so far. It had everything I wanted from the original, and much more than I could have ever expected. From the very first opening scene, with its wholesome piano keys reminiscent of the first film’s theme sound, it was as if my soul was transported back to the emotions the first film brought, while also completely transporting me into the world of the sequel.

What I love about Pixar is their true creativity, making each new world they create seamlessly fit into that world and make it immersive in incredibly ingenious detail. Like other obsessions of the past year. elemental. They have witty creations themed around world-building and the nature of characters. For example, the film’s sarcasm was a huge chasm that opened up in Riley’s mind. Attempts to talk about the gap only resonated with sarcasm. It was a fun prank. Or the brainstorming becomes a real-life hurricane storm of idea bulbs from the first movie.

But what resonated the most with me in this movie was anxiety. Now he’s one of my favorite characters in any animated film of all time, especially the one who finally personified my own insecurities into a visual representation on screen. It truly took my breath away. And in some ways it gave me more anxiety. But what continues throughout this film is an entirely cathartic and healing journey. I laughed, cried ugly, clutched my heart, and was hurt by so many revelations. Maya Hawke did an absolutely amazing job at portraying the voice and essence that the character needed us to have.
Inside Out 2 is emotional roller coaster
But the most thrilling part was showing what anxiety, a full-blown force of nature, can really be, especially what it feels and looks like inside a person. How unstoppable, uncontrollable, untethered, and improbable can things become once they reach the breaking point of insane carnage. You must have complete and total control over every action, thought, and emotion you have. Hijack it. It’s about making you do things you’ve never done in a million years. Hijinks ensue, wreaking untold havoc on your life and relationships until you don’t recognize yourself in the mirror. For me, this was the most important and powerful moment in the film for depicting anxiety in this way.
heart is important
What I feel guilty about in these movies is when they get inside the heads of other characters and see the interplay of their emotions. I love the differences! I wish Pixar would give us more. My hope is that Disney will produce a short using the Pixar shorts like they did with the Marvel movies. Inside Out 2 and elemental. But yes. There’s definitely more of an inside view into the minds of other characters.
Joy’s Journey
Joey’s journey through this story is, as always, the heart and depth of the story’s core. Once again, it delivers a heartbreaking moment that will take your breath away. She, too, must learn what it means to experience much more complex emotions and navigate what that means for her and Riley’s future. The moment I feel most hopeful is the moment she feels most hopeless. It further helped me deal with my own moments of helplessness, and letting her go through it made all the difference to me. Suddenly I wasn’t alone in that movie theater. If even Joy could feel those things as she tried her best to be the beacon of leadership, to be the kind of Joy others needed her to be, even she was helpless about what to do to recover from the tragedy. You could feel it. I’m just now realizing that joy may be the most complex emotion in history, and certainly the most complex emotion in both of these movies.
journey of self discovery
To be honest, Riley’s journey in this film was my own. Specifically, what happens when elementary school friends go to high school? It wasn’t until much later in life that I realized my mistake, and at the time, I wished I had done things differently or found a sense of self sooner.
That’s why I truly, truly hope that this will be an eye-opening and heart-warming revelation for many people, regardless of age, about how important it is not to abandon their belief systems and true soulmates. For shiny new things that can help you adapt. But most of all, I want everyone to experience the kind of healing I experienced in seeing new emotions, especially anxiety.
A sequel that stands alone
Too many people are too focused on comparing this movie to the first one. The first film was a cultural phenomenon with themes and revelations that were unheard of at the time. It completely changed the way we look at psychology. You can’t do any of that in a sequel. And, unsurprisingly, many of the sequels, especially the more recent ones, have completely fallen flat.
But finally, Inside Out 2 It makes me feel like they got it right. It doesn’t try to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors or the recent amazing animated films. Instead, it is committed to analyzing changes in adolescence through its own basic framework of themes and characters. It’s simple yet sophisticated and shines!

Inside Out 2 It gets a 10 out of 10 from me, a score that cannot be given lightly. Of all the movies I’ve seen this year, only one has won this award. These 10 points also relate to my personal journey of enlightenment through this film, which made a huge difference to my mental health. Pixar has once again created a masterpiece that is both visually stunning and emotionally profound, taking you on a healing journey that resonates deeply and leaves a lasting impact.
