Musk’s involvement in the conversation, which took place while Russia continued its full-scale assault on Ukraine, was first reported by Axios on Friday.
A recent Wall Street Journal report said Musk had been in regular contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin and had publicly opposed aid to Ukraine while spreading pro-Kremlin narratives about Ukraine. Civilians were affected during the blackout caused by the attack on Moscow’s energy infrastructure.
President Trump, who has frequently expressed opposition to U.S. military aid to Kiev and is a long-time NATO skeptic, said he would support Ukraine but did not provide details, Axios reported, citing sources.
Zelenskyy felt the fact that the call came so soon after Trump was declared the winner of the Nov. 5 presidential election was a positive sign, Axios reported. The two met in New York City early in the fall as the campaign was underway.
“I commended the family and team for a great job. We agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance cooperation. “Strong and unwavering American leadership is essential for the world and for a just peace,” Zelenskyy said in a statement after the call.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Georgiy Tyky said it was a “great” call and that the Ukrainian team remained in close contact with Trump’s associates.
