Tech billionaire Elon Musk, an ally of President-elect Trump, publicly supported Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) in the race for Senate Republican leader.
“Rick Scott for established majority leader!” Musk posted on the social media platform X, which he owns, on Sunday.
Scott is running against Republican Sen. John Thune (D-S.D.) and Sen. John Cornyn (Texas), who served as Senate Republican whip during President Trump’s first two years in office.
Scott’s bid to become Republican leader in the Senate has gained momentum among Trump’s closest allies in recent days.
In a separate post, Musk said Thune was the “Democrats’ top choice.”
Others, including Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), also supported Scott. Rubio shared online that he would vote for his Florida colleague for the leadership position. Hagerty endorsed Scott in a post Saturday.
President Trump said late Sunday that Senate Republican leaders should agree to adjourn the nominations. This would allow nominations and appointments to be processed quickly without Senate approval.
Rep. Scott immediately accepted President Trump’s proposal and said, “I agree 100%,” and “I will do whatever it takes to help Trump’s nominee pass the Senate quickly.”
