Moscow threatened retaliation after claiming to have shot down eight US-made missiles launched from Ukraine towards Russia’s southwestern Belgorod region.
“Such actions by the Kiev regime, which is supported by Western curators, will face retaliation,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Telegram on Saturday, but did not specify what countermeasures it would take. Ukraine has not commented on the strike.
The Kremlin considers carrying out strikes deep inside Russian territory using long-range ATACMS missiles supplied to Kiev by the United States and capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers away as a significant escalation of the war.
