Ron Gilbert returns to the Monkey Island franchise with 2022’s Return To Monkey Island, but it’s unclear when the series will get another official sequel. But that didn’t stop a group of die-hard Monkey Island fans from creating their own unofficial game, The Booze of Monkey Island.
The new title is described as a “love letter” to the classic Monkey Island games from Bean Adventure Agency, the small studio that created The Booze of Monkey Island. Like previous games, players take on the role of Guybrush Threepwood in a point-and-click adventure. Although this game is not a full-length game, it seems to recreate the taste of its predecessor.
After surviving the shipwreck, Guybrush returned to Booty Island, where he was last seen in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. Speaking of LeChuck, Guybrush’s enemies have returned and threaten him and his partner Elaine, so Guybrush must escape Booty Island as quickly as possible. The local bartender agrees to help Guybrush in his attempts to repair the ship, but only if Guybrush can drive business from the bar.
The Booze of Monkey Island is currently in Early Access, so it’s not completely finished at this stage, but it still looks like a polished version of the previous games in the series. Bean Adventure Agency offers the game for free on its site, emphasizing that this is a non-profit venture. Nonetheless, Disney, the owner of the Monkey Island series through its 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm, may eventually request or demand that the title be removed. If you want to see and enjoy The Booze of Monkey Island in person, there’s no time like the present.
