Author and activist Monica Lewinsky said Tuesday that the judge overseeing former President Trump’s classified documents case should be impeached.
In a post on the social platform If the documents were declassified (which they weren’t), all Trump had to do was copy them, then return the requested originals and explain that they were declassified (which they weren’t for the later documents). ”
Cannon postponed the confidential documents case indefinitely and declined to set a trial date until pretrial motions are completed.
“If taking it was an honest (ahem) mistake… Just send it back. Like every other president found to have classified material in his personal possessions. (It still needed to be investigated, but may not have led to a trial.)” Lewinsky continued in Tuesday’s post. Lewinsky added, “The danger and harm posed by this judge is astounding.”
Cannon has faced intense criticism over the way he handled the case. She said some said she was paying too much tribute to her former president. Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele claimed this week that he was “putting the prosecutors on trial.”
According to a recent report in The New York Times, two judges attempted to hand over the document case to Cannon when it was assigned to her a year ago. The request comes after Cannon first handled a challenge to a search warrant at the former president’s home, and her appointment as special master was later halted by the high court.
Lewinsky rose to prominence in the 1990s through her special investigation into former President Clinton, and has become an outspoken anti-bullying activist in recent years.
Earlier this year, she became the face of Reformation’s “You’ve Got the Power” workwear campaign in partnership with Vote.org to encourage voting.
And late last year she wrote an op-ed calling for a series of constitutional amendments, including an age limit for elected officials and a ban on presidential self-pardons.
