Moana Pacifica have signed Wellington Lions forward and former Hurricanes 5-8 Jackson Garden-Bachev to a contract through the 2025 season.
The 29-year-old is the son of former All Black and Samoan international Steven Bachev and former Black Fern Sue Garden-Bachev, and has Maori, Samoan, French Polynesian and Cook Islander ancestry.
After playing for the Levels and Hurricanes in Super Rugby, Bachov has joined CA Bribe in French D2 for the 2023/24 season.
He returns to the Lions for this provincial season, having previously won the NPC title in his home province in 2022.
“I’m really excited to be part of such an exciting sport that has grown on and off the field over the past few years,” Garden-Bachev said.
“It’s going to be really special to connect with my Pacific heritage. I’ve always been proud to be Pacific Islander, but I’ve never really immersed myself in it as part of my heritage, so I’m looking forward to learning more about myself and my people.”
“Jackson is a talented player who brings invaluable experience, leadership and playmaking skills that will strengthen Moana Pacifica’s backline,” said Faalogo Tana Umaga, head coach of Moana Pacifica.
“We are grateful to have secured his services for next season and look forward to having him join the team.”
