The Mexican national team had quite an eventful night in Honduras last Friday, losing 2-0 to Honduras in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League. However, not only did El Tri fall, but at the end of the game, coach Javier Aguirre suffered an injury that appeared to have been hit on the head by a beer can.
“The FMF unequivocally condemns the acts of violence that occurred tonight at the Francisco Morazan Stadium in San Pedro Sula, Honduras,” the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said in a statement.
“We demand that CONCACAF take immediate and decisive action to address this issue in accordance with its regulations. Football should be a celebration, not a battlefield. We call on all parties, including institutions, coaches, players, fans and the media. We urge you to work together to create a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved.”

Towards the end of the game, a can appeared and hit the Mexican coach on the head, causing him to vomit blood. This could lead to a fine for Honduras and a ban from the stadium for the fan who threw it. This was an unfortunate turn of events on what should have been a good night for Honduras with a landmark victory.

After coming off the bench, Celtic man Luis Palma scored an assist to give Honduras a 2-0 win in their Concacaf Nations League match, which put Honduras through to the semi-finals. They will have to look at a 2-0 lead when they travel to Mexico on Tuesday at the Estadio Nemesio Diez in Toluca, Mexico.
“Concacaf strongly condemns the incidents and acts of violence that occurred after the final whistle of the Nations League men’s national team match between Honduras and Mexico tonight, during which Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was struck by a projectile thrown onto the pitch from the stands. Concacaf said in a statement:
“The safety of teams and fans is Concacaf’s top priority. This type of violent behavior has no place in football. This incident will now be referred to the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee for further review and investigation.”
El Tri have struggled since the Copa America but are expected to at least face the United States in the Concacaf Nations League final and anything less would be disappointing. There is still time to turn this result around when they return to Mexico, but they will be looking for a quick start to the game after trailing by two goals.
