Actresses often face pressure to shed their bold, strong-willed images to ease the transition into traditional, shy roles. The star we discuss today also had to succumb to the pressure to project a different image, breaking away from what many perceive as Westernized femininity.
Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971) directed by Dev Anand Zeenat Aman Her breakout role. The movie portrayed her as a free-spirited woman who had no qualms about going against her family. A few years later, in 1973, Zeenat again appeared in a glamorous role in the hit film Yaadon Ki Baaraat. She succeeded in establishing herself as a leading actress in the entertainment industry by portraying a confident woman.
Released in 1978 <돈>She also played the role of a glamorous and modern woman. In the same year, Zeenat gave her most memorable performance in Raj Kapoor’s film Satyam Shivam Sundaram. No doubt she played the role of Rupa, a woman with a disfigured face.
From what Zeenat mentioned in her Instagram post, her modern image was clearly an obstacle she had to contend with in getting the role. In the 1970s, Zeenat gained great recognition for her unconventional roles. The image of her wearing a miniskirt and boots did not match the simple appearance of Rupa, a country girl with a scarred face.
Zeenat admitted that her ‘contemporary image was the culprit’ that led to Kapoor never considering her for the role. “I was already a star in my own right, and I was starting to get annoyed that he wasn’t interested in casting me,” she said in her post. The unknown role required an actress who could easily define Rupa’s innocence and convey the difficulties of a society that perceives her as a “fallen” woman because of her appearance. Zeenat was determined to shed her glamorous persona and convince Kapoor to offer her the role. So she wore a Ghagra Choli, braided her hair with a parandi, and scarred her face with tissue and glue. This brave move helped her win the role and convince Kapoor.
Zeenat’s casting in Satyam Shivam Sundaram was definitely a turning point for her and the film. She continues to be admired for her nuanced and perfect portrayal of Rupa. This film also gained popularity for its portrayal and understanding of beauty and spirituality and emerged as a landmark in Bollywood.
