In the spirit of the season, Mary Trump took a light-hearted look back at her family’s Christmas gatherings as a child and recalled the unique gift she received from then-Donald Trump and his wife, the late Ivana Trump.
“Christmas with Trump wasn’t my favorite time as a child, but it wasn’t lacking in entertainment,” she said in a video uploaded Sunday to her YouTube channel, Mary Trump Media.
She said things “got interesting” after her uncle married model Ivana in 1977 and she also joined the festivities.
Mary Trump opened the first gift the couple gave her and said, “It was a box of underwear.”
“Yes. “It was a three-pack of underwear from Bloomingdale’s that retailed for $12,” she said. “It was a very interesting moment, but then it got a little weirder.”
“The next year I bought shoes.” she continued. “Singular. Shoe.”
She recalled that they were gold lamé shoes with hard candy fillings on a four-inch heel.
“At some point it occurred to her that it might have been an award or a party favor from a luncheon she was at,” said Mary Trump, then 13. “She thought, ‘Okay, why not give that to her?’” hour.
That same year, Mary’s brother, Fred Trump III, received a leather-bound diary, she recalled.
“Actually, I was a little jealous. “Because it was so cool?” she said “It was a calendar year journal until we figured out it wasn’t a journal. And that was two years ago. So it wasn’t even something he could use.”
Mary said she and Fred started a competition every Christmas to see who would get the “worst gift” from Trump.
The gold shoes were her favorite, she said. The following year, when she was 14, she received a gift basket filled with canned sardines, crackers, and olives. The basket was found to be missing an item. She guessed it was caviar.
Today, it is no longer possible to receive strange gifts from her uncle. Psychologist Mary Trump has been critical of Donald for years, publishing several books about the family dynamics that led to his narcissistic personality and authoritarian leadership style.
And she offered advice to gift-givers everywhere.
“If you buy someone something that comes in a pair, like shoes or socks, you should give them both,” she suggested.
The countdown to Trump has begun
