The crash occurred at 4:30 a.m. on Rumiñahui Highway and involved a Ford Explorer registered to Angulo’s sister. He was traveling with four other people when their vehicle collided with the 50-tonne metal structure. The impact was so powerful that the structure moved five meters. Tragically, two other lives were lost in the accident. Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a rising star of Independente Juniors, and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno, cousin of Diogo Nazareno of Cuniburo Fútbol Club.

Angulo was rushed to the hospital and underwent a delicate surgery, a decompressive craniectomy. Surgeons removed 300cc of blood to relieve pressure on the head caused by the trauma. He also suffered a pulmonary contusion requiring chest tube insertion, but had no active bleeding.
But the injury was too severe. After spending 35 days in hospital, Angulo succumbed to his injuries on November 11.
