Manchester United have confirmed the return of Joe Hugill from his loan at Wigan Athletic.
Wigan also announced the news of Hugill’s return to Old Trafford.
A club statement from Sean Maloney’s side read: “We can confirm that striker Joe Hugill has returned to Manchester United after completing his loan spell at Wigan Athletic.”
“The 21-year-old leaves Brick Community Stadium with 18 appearances in all competitions. The highlight of his loan spell came when he scored a brace in a 4-0 win over Bristol Rovers in September.”
“The club would like to thank Joe for his contribution during his time at Latics and wish him well for the future.”
Hugill joined Wigan on a season-long loan deal last July. He scored five goals for the team and now has a total of 43 senior appearances to his name.
The Carrington Academy graduate was loaned out to League One side Burton Albion last year and scored on his debut, but has not found the net in 17 appearances for the Brewers since.
He also spent time with Altrincham.
Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst has revealed that United plan to send Hugill back on loan this month.
But the 21-year-old “might have to consider a drop to a Ligue 2 side.”
As Luckhurst noted, Hugill’s academy teammates Radek Vitek, Rhys Bennett and Sonny Aljofree remain on loan at FC Blau-Weiss Linz, Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley respectively.
Ruben Amorim and his players are back in action on Sunday as they head to the Emirates for their FA Cup third round tie against Arsenal.
