There was a lot of anticipation among fans ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal.
However, the encounter at the Etihad Stadium did not live up to the billing as both teams were held to a disappointing goalless draw to share the spoils of the match.
The stalemate gave Liverpool the upper hand in the title race, with Liverpool taking a two-point lead at the top of the league standings with a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
Arsenal played a cautious game to prevent Manchester City’s attack threat.
The Gunners succeeded in their strategy by limiting Pep Guardiola’s side to just one shot on target.
But it also meant they limited their own chances at the Etihad Stadium.
Nathan Ake came close to scoring early in the game, but his effort was saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Gabriel Jesus also looked threatening at times and came very close to turning in Bukayo Saka’s cross after half-time.
In the end, with both sides underperforming, a draw felt like an appropriate outcome.
Mikel Arteta will probably be a happier manager with the result, as Arsenal underperformed at City’s home stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side are set to return to Premier League action on Wednesday when they welcome Aston Villa in Manchester.
Meanwhile, Arsenal faces Luton Town at the Emirates Stadium on the same day.
