Despite the signing of Manuel Ugarte, Manchester United still appear to be short on numbers in midfield, failing to adequately replace the likes of Scott McTominay and Sofiane Amrabat.
As Casemiro’s poor form continues, Erik ten Hag has warned fans not to expect too much from the Uruguayan newcomer, who is expected to make his debut against Southampton.
Kobe Mainu is still top of the list for the national team, but he has spent too much time with club and country since his debut and needs a break.
But with Christian Eriksen as the only alternative, the Netherlands manager was forced to continue playing the England international, as the Dane no longer had the legs to compete in big games.
We need a midfielder
Injuries to the Englishman and Ten Hag could see the club rely heavily on academy star Toby Collier, leading to rumours the club are looking to bring in free agent Adrian Rabiot.
It remains to be seen whether INEOS will decide to sign a French player who would go against their policy, as the new co-owners are focused on signing players under the age of 26.
One player who fits these criteria and is being watched closely by the club is Bologna’s versatile midfielder Lewis Ferguson.
According to Corriere dello sports (Football Italia) United were interested in a summer move for the Scotland international but ultimately opted for his former team-mate Joshua Zirkzee.
United are interested in Ferguson
Bologna are fearful of the future approach and, despite the 25-year-old being under contract until 2027, are keen to offer better terms and extend his contract until 2029.
Ferguson is happy in Italy and is open to extending his stay, with the club continuing talks with his agent. The Scotland ace suffered a knee injury last season and is currently out. He is expected to return in November.
Last season he scored six goals and provided five more assists, playing as an attacking midfielder and further back. He can also play on the wing and up front if required, and his versatility makes him a big attraction for interested clubs.
He currently has a market value of €24m and could rise further if an agreement is reached, making it much harder for United to pry him out of Italy.
