Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Luka Doncic is “doing well” after the 25-year-old star’s home was burglarized Friday, the latest in a series of break-ins at professional players’ homes in the past few months.
“I reached out to him and sent him a text,” Kidd said Saturday. “That person is doing well after the incident. I’m glad no one was hurt. “I talked to that person today.”
Doncic business manager Lara Beth Seager told multiple media outlets that no one was home at the time of the break-in and that the incident is under investigation. About $30,000 worth of jewelry was seized from the home, according to the Dallas Morning News, which obtained an internal police report.
It’s unclear who burglarized Doncic’s home.
Since September, the homes of at least six professional athletes have been burglarized, including Doncic’s. Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley’s home was broken into on September 15th. Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis had his home broken into on November 2nd.
On October 6, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ home in Missouri was broken into. Mahomes called the incident “frustrating” and “disappointing.” Mahomes’ teammate Travis Kelce also had his home broken into in October. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s Ohio home was broken into on December 9.
The NFL and NBA issued a memo last November regarding threats from burglary gangs targeting the homes of professional athletes.
The NBA memo states that the FBI identified a “South American transnational theft ring,” a “well-organized and sophisticated organization incorporating advanced technology and technology, including proactive surveillance, drones, and signal jamming devices.”
Dončić suffered a left calf injury during the Mavericks’ game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 25. He is expected to be out for at least a month.
The Mavericks opened their four-game road trip with a win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
