Zandvoort, Netherlands — Logan Sargent suffered a serious crash during practice for the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday, leaving his car burning and badly damaged and ruling him out of qualifying.
Sargent appeared to lose control of his Williams after laying one wheel on the wet grass at the right-hand corner entry, veering left and crashing into the metal barrier.
The occupant was unhurt and walked away from the vehicle as flames spread to the rear of the vehicle and smoke poured from the air intake.
The meeting, which took place in rainy weather, was immediately preceded by a red flag being raised just before police put out the fire and loaded the vehicles onto trucks.
Williams said the car had been repaired and the chassis “looked good now”, but the team was not ready for Sargeant to qualify.
It is the latest in a string of crashes for F1’s only American driver. Sargeant crashed at the Canadian Grand Prix in June and collided with Kevin Magnussen at the Miami Grand Prix in May. He also crashed in practice for the Japanese Grand Prix in April.
Williams’ sergeant will be replaced by Carlos Sainz Jr. starting in 2025.
The Dutch Grand Prix is on Sunday.
