As the government funding deadline arrived early Saturday morning, Congress passed a temporary plan to prevent a shutdown after several days and nights of chaos in Washington.
President Biden is expected to sign the funding bill Saturday.
The chaos at the Capitol this week, marking the end of the 118th Congress, offers a glimpse into the uphill battle the 119th Congress will face when Republicans have a much slimmer majority in the House.
The spending agreement comes just a month before President-elect Trump returns to the White House with an ambitious agenda that may be harder to implement than expected.
Also late in the day, the Senate approved an amendment to the Social Security Act that would increase benefits for 2 million retired public employees. They also approved a bill to relocate the RFK Stadium site to the District of Columbia.
The debt limit increase that President Trump called for as part of a continuing resolution to extend government funding through March 14 was not cut on Friday, but will certainly be on the minds of lawmakers as they leave Washington and look toward their next session.
