Firefighters battled to extinguish a series of large fires in the Los Angeles area Thursday morning. The fire killed five people, devastated communities from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena and forced thousands of people desperately to flee their homes.
The fierce winds that drove the flames and confused evacuations have calmed down somewhat and were not expected to be as strong during the day. This will allow firefighters to make progress in containing fires across large areas, including large fires in Pacific Palisades and Altadena.
Here’s the latest:
Comparing satellite images before and after the fire clearly revealed the level of destruction in some areas.
About 250 homes were reduced to rubble in the Altadena neighborhood, dotted with leafy trees and turquoise swimming pools. Only a few homes remained, some still engulfed in flames, according to images from Maxar Technologies.
Of the approximately 70 homes across the Pacific Ocean in Malibu, fewer than 10 appeared to be intact.
