Two deputies opened fire on the suspected carjacker just outside the home. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor last week.
According to court documents and law enforcement sources, at 1:17 a.m. on Friday, July 5, a U.S. Marshals Service deputy was at his post outside Sotomayor’s home when 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers emerged from a silver minivan and appeared to attempt to rob the officer’s Dodge Durango, banging on the vehicle with a handgun.
The deputy fired a shot from inside the vehicle, striking Flowers in the jaw. The suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. A second deputy also fired his service weapon, but did not hit Flowers, DC police confirmed.
The teen is now charged with armed carjacking, carrying a handgun without a license, and possession of a large-capacity ammunition supply device. The last charge alleges the suspect was carrying a magazine with more than 10 rounds, which is illegal in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. police said they are still investigating, but there is no evidence that Flowers knew who was attempting to rob a car or that he was anywhere near Judge Sotomayor’s home.
The identities of the two U.S. marshals have not been confirmed.
Carjacking According to DC police, there’s been a 46% decline in the district this year.
