Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown has agreed to a contract extension that ties him to the team through the 2026-27 season, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. According to this contract, the base salary will reportedly be $8.5 million and the bonus will be $10 million per year.
Brown and the Kings were previously reported to be at an impasse over a potential contract extension, as the coach’s contract was set to expire after next season. Wojnarowski reported last week that the two sides held talks about the gap.
On Thursday, Charania reported that the Kings offered Brown a three-year, $21 million contract worth $27 million including bonuses, with Brown seeking $10 million per year. Figures reported Friday indicate that Brown, who is set to make $4.5 million next year, got most of what he wanted.
Mike Brown’s contract puts him closer to the upper tier of NBA coaching salaries.
An average annual value of $10 million would tie Brown with Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers for the sixth-highest salary in the NBA, but reported numbers show Brown coming in right behind him. Some of the coaches who are said to be ahead of them are:
All of these deals have been concluded to date since Williams reset the market with a deal a year ago. Any contender with a good coach can expect to pay him $80,000 in salary in the near future.
Mike Brown led the Kings forward. Can he push them further?
Brown just completed his second season with the Kings, a tenure in which the team went 94-70. With Brown’s addition, the team took a huge leap forward in offense last season and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
This year has been less successful, despite the team winning just two fewer games than in 2022-23. A 46-36 record ranked ninth in the Western Conference, and although the Kings got some nice revenge against the Golden State Warriors, they missed the season-ending play-in tournament three days later against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Regardless, the Kings will want to move forward with their core of DeAaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and Keegan Murray. This means preventing the people you bring in to work together from leaving. However, some steps still need to be taken and it is unclear where we go from here.
At least Sacramento has the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Contracts like Harrison Barnes and Kevin Herter are also available for transfer, and Malik Monk is set to become a free agent.
