Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), a leading contender in the tight race to continue as speaker from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), said Thursday she will decide on Friday whether she will vote for him.
“We’ll make a decision tomorrow,” Spartz told reporters at the Capitol, adding that he and Johnson met and it went well.
Spartz also told reporters that he and the House speaker had spoken to each other about governance in the Legislature. She also emphasized the importance of sharing House Republicans’ future actions “publicly.”
“This is not about me or anyone else, it’s about the American people,” Spartz said. “We have to deliver to the American people.”
Friday’s vote to choose a new House of Commons speaker comes shortly after Johnson’s debate last month centered on a year-end funding package to keep the government open.
On Monday, Spartz said Johnson must come up with a plan to deliver the president-elect’s agenda if he wants to win Trump’s vote for the presidency. The Indiana Republican told Fox News he was looking at the chairman’s “performance” and believed “unfortunately, we will not be able to implement President Trump’s agenda without a chairman who has the courage, vision and will.” plan.”
“If Chairman Johnson wants to be chairman, he needs to have a plan and commit to that plan, unlike he did last year. He promised to create a finance committee in the House, so we have a plan to raise the debt ceiling, and President Trump is right about that. “We have no plans.”
Earlier this week, Trump expressed his complete and total support for Johnson, calling him a “great, hard-working, religious man.”
