Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has urged the Supreme Court to deliver its verdict on the Kolkata rape and murder case as soon as possible. In a recent conversation, Ganguly praised the justice movement in Kolkata and said the Supreme Court’s verdict should be an ‘example’ for the world. He also added that the verdict should serve as a warning to prevent such crimes from happening in the future. The Supreme Court will hear the RG Kar case on September 17, when it will ask the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to submit a fresh status report.
“I have not read the Supreme Court order today. But like everyone who has passionately and apolitically participated in this movement, I hope they get justice. That is the most important thing. Every court process takes time. But this is what I am asking the Supreme Court to judge this case as soon as possible,” Ganguly told reporters.
“This verdict should be an example to the world. No one will even think of committing similar crimes in the future. It is truly commendable to see people standing together and I urge the court to pass judgment as soon as possible,” he added.
The BJP has become more vocal in its demands for the city’s police chief Vineet Goyal’s dismissal after the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Kolkata hospital rape and murder case today, with renewed focus on the role of the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has tried to buy time. She has said the police chief cannot resign immediately given the upcoming Durga Puja, which calls for special emphasis on law and order.
“The Kolkata police commissioner came to me several times last week and offered to resign,” Ms. Banerjee said. “We are facing a Pujo. Someone who knows law and order should be there. If we can just be patient for a few days, will it be a Mahabharata (big thing)?” she added.
