According to court documents in the Jontay Porter sports betting scandal, the former Raptor reportedly texted a sports bettor during a game.
Former NBA player turned pandemic cryptocurrency bro Jontay Porter is facing a setback for sports betting fraud charges without a fight. Last July, Porter pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud and received a lifetime ban from the NBA.
As sentencing date approaches on May 20, more details are being revealed about the outrageous and rudimentary tricks he attempted to orchestrate.
Federal authorities have provided more insight into the scheme after arresting a sixth person in the scandal, according to USA Today. On January 22, 2024, Porter reportedly sent a text to bettors detailing his plan to remove himself from the game against the Grizzlies.
Although the legal documents do not reveal Porter’s identity, it is clear that “NBA Player 1” is believed to be the man.
“Press Under to see larger numbers. No blocks, no steals. “At first, I would play on the bench for 2-3 minutes and then as a substitute, my eyes would tell me that it was killing me again.” Court documents allege that “NBA Player 1” sent text messages to athletes from other sports.
Moreover, authorities say the co-conspirator also received inside information about the March 20 match, in which Porter again confirmed his intention to eliminate himself. What appeared to be a friend’s get-rich-quick scheme ended his career and he now faces 20 years in prison.
As sports betting becomes the norm in professional sports, algorithms are quick to notice irregular bets.
USA Today DraftKings added that they noticed that Porter was being charged such a large amount of money that it immediately raised red flags from everyone. Placing large amounts of American currency on Jontay Porter is not something any logical sports betting fan would do.
Rumor has it that Porter may have racked up significant gambling debts, and his actions were an attempt to recoup those amounts. Porter is the first victim of the new era of sports betting in sports, and despite the risks involved, he likely won’t be the last.
