Trott is currently Afghanistan’s head coach, having held the position since 2022, and in January renewed his contract until the end of 2024. At this stage, there is uncertainty as to whether the 43-year-old will continue in charge. There is no real conflict between this position and his international commitments, as the SA20 is scheduled to take place in January 2025. There is no confirmation yet as to whether Trott will renew his contract, which is due to expire in December.
Trott’s time in Afghanistan has been successful, with the team’s results at global events improving significantly. Despite their talent in the shorter formats, they have won just one match in ICC tournaments in the past nine months, having beaten Australia, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Bangladesh in the 2023 ODI and 2024 T20I World Cups. They reached the semi-finals of the latter, losing to South Africa.
Trott could also be considered for the limited-overs job at England, but is seen as an outside bet with a decision on his future under incumbent manager Matthew Mott expected in the coming days. Trott has 127 caps for England and has previously coached in this role with both the Under-19s and Lions. He is currently head coach of Trent Rockets in the men’s Hundreds.
