Would you like to volunteer your time to help us bring cutting-edge research to the largest political and international relations academic audience on the Internet? If so, read on!
Commissioning is a dynamic and rewarding role for anyone who enjoys reading and disseminating cutting-edge research to millions of readers. This role is designed for those who engage in advanced reading and research and are immersed in scholarly debate. For this reason, we generally seek applications from PhD students/candidates, postdoctoral researchers and masters students (either in teaching or research). Specifically, this role involves identifying (and working with) authors in a topic/area of interest to you to commission unique articles for the website. We hope to source articles that explore and advance the cutting edge of theory and practice, and do so in an accessible way. We define international relations broadly, and there is virtually no field in which editors do not welcome commissioning content. This includes related fields that lean into international affairs, such as history, law, sociology, political science and area studies. Therefore, if you work in one or more of these fields, or at their intersection, we welcome your application.
You are responsible for researching and contacting potential authors yourself, but we will provide guidance and mentorship along the way. Any work contributed by the Delegating Editor will be credited permanently on your output as a proven record of your efforts. You have the power to set your own schedule and adjust this role to fit your busy schedule in a way that works best for you, but you must understand that this role is self-initiated. Therefore, you must bring your own drive, passion, and initiative. If you cannot work on your own initiative and come up with your own ideas, this role is not for you.. Everything we publish is completely open, so you can easily share your success story with anyone who can click the link.
This role is remote and voluntary. Volunteering at E-International Relations is not your typical ‘work experience’. First, we coordinate our activities remotely using Slack, so you don’t have to go to work to volunteer. Second, we don’t have paid staff; we are all volunteers. We volunteer part of our free time because we want to contribute to maintaining the best online resource for students and scholars of international politics. Finally, we support our editors in learning skills, managing their own time, and developing their own projects. As a result, the more volunteers give of themselves, the more they get out of the experience. It’s no wonder that many editors have gone on to senior positions in the publishing industry, politics, and academia based on their experience with us.
So what do you get?
- By networking with editorial teams and other scholars in a professional context, you can grow your profile and build links for collaborations and future projects that will add value to your academic and professional journey.

- You will learn about academia and the publishing industry from a new perspective.
- You’ll get valuable content to include on your resume, and you can ask for letters of recommendation later if needed.
