Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) dodged a question Sunday about whether former President Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, calling it a “game of catch” he wouldn’t play.
ABC’s George Stephanopoulis asked Johnson on “This Week” whether he could “categorically” say Trump lost the last election.
“This is a game the mainstream media plays all the time with leading members of the Republican Party. It’s a miscellaneous game. “When we talk about the future, you want us to litigate something that happened four years ago,” Johnson responded. “We’re not going to talk about what happened in 2020. “We’re going to talk about 2024 and how we’re going to solve the problems of the American people.”
Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), similarly dodged questions on the debate stage last week, refusing to answer whether Trump lost in 2020 and instead saying he was “focused on the future.” was criticized.
Johnson said Sunday that he works with Biden “all the time,” but that he “won’t engage” with questions about 2020.
“Everyone needs to get through this and move forward. That’s what we need to talk about. What will happen on November 5 and the days after?” Johnson said.
Stephanopoulis asked Johnson if he would not say, like Vance, that Trump lost the 2020 election against Biden.
“Joe Biden has been president for four years. There is no question about this. Right? “It’s already decided, it’s already been decided, it’s already been played and I’m not going to play,” Johnson said.
Stephanopoulis argued that the problem is Trump’s refusal to accept the results of the previous election as November 5 approaches.
“George, I’m not going to play games. “If you have any questions about the issues facing our country, ask them.” Johnson changed direction. “What if another hurricane is heading towards this country? What about Iran attacking Israel? “What about the rising crime rates that are alarming everyone across this country and the cost of living as hard-working families cannot afford it?”
