Johnny Gaudreau’s wife paid tribute to her late husband in two social media posts on Saturday, speaking out for the first time since the former Flames forward’s death.
Meridith Godreau shared photos of her family with Godreau in two separate Instagram posts, praising him as the “best dad” to their 1-year-old daughter Noah and 6-month-old son Johnny. In another post, she thanked her late husband for giving her the best time of her life, calling him the luckiest girl in the world for the time they spent together.
“I really, really love you. You were perfect. Some days it was so good it didn’t seem real. I love everything about you. You are my forever and I can’t wait to see you again. I love you forever,” she said in a post that included several photos of her family.
“The best dad in the world. So caring and loving,” she said. “The best partner you could ever have as a parent. John never missed a single appointment. He was the best at putting babies to sleep and the apple of Noah’s eye. We love how much she looks like John. We’re going to make you so proud. We love you so, so, so much, Daddy.”
Godrow and his brother Matthew were tragically murdered by a suspected drunk driver the day before they were due to be best man at their sister’s wedding.

Two brothers were killed Thursday night when they were struck from behind by a driver while riding their bikes near their childhood home in New Jersey. The driver is now facing charges in connection with their deaths.
Flames fans, many wearing Gaudreau jerseys, paid tribute by leaving jerseys and hats on the steps of the Scotiabank Saddledome. Others placed Skittles and purple bottles of Gatorade, Gaudreau’s favourite snacks.
Kimberly Brass, a diehard Flames fan who said she was devastated by the news, still looked visibly emotional as she offered her condolences on Saturday.
“He brought so much happiness to the Calgary Flames,” she said. “It’s really heartbreaking.”
Young Flames fan Dominic Primeau paid tribute to his idol at the Dome on Saturday by wearing a signed Godrow jersey, saying he grew up watching his idol play hockey. He became emotional as he shared his love for the player.
“It was a huge shock to me. When my parents told me, I couldn’t believe it at first,” he said.
“I know Johnny is loved. I’m proud that everyone is rooting for him.”
Flames season-ticket holder Tessa MacArthur expressed her condolences Saturday, saying it felt like a bad dream.
“He was a really exciting player to watch and it’s sad to see him and his brother pass away at such a young age,” she told Global News.
Authorities have charged Sean Higgins, 43, of New Jersey, with two counts of vehicular manslaughter.
