When Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner in late 2023, people were shocked. Not because they had broken up…
But because of the smear campaign that followed.
With Jonas Brothers Game of Thrones The couple dated for seven years, had two children, and seemed to have a pretty normal romance in secret.
But things got worse when they decided to break up, and ugly things were hinted at for Joe and Sophie.
Things that still haven’t disappeared even after a year. In fact, they might even appear on Jonas’ next album.
So what really happened during Joe Jonas’ divorce? And how are they both moving forward? Let’s take a closer look.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s Divorce: The Messy Parts
The music superstar filed for divorce on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. He immediately hired celebrity attorney Tom Sasser (remember Tiger Woods’ divorce? Same guy!).
Initial reports of the couple’s split left Sophie absolutely bewildered.
TMZ According to sources, the reason Joe Jonas decided to divorce Sophie Turner is because she loves to party too much.
“She likes to party, he likes to stay home. They have very different lifestyles,” the insider claimed.
Another source interviewed by the outlet claimed Joe caught Sophie crossing the line in his home.
The report said “Joe had access to the Ringcam, which contained words and actions that led Sophie to realize that their marriage was over.”
It was later leaked by an insider. Our Week In fact, it was NBD. The cameras reportedly caught Sophie talking “a bit negatively” about her friend and Joe, and according to the source, “it wasn’t much more than that, but that was the final straw.”
To be honest, many people were skeptical that Sophie was too much of a party girl to continue married life.
As things turned, the report described Joe as being “too controlling” and insensitive to Sophie’s needs. At one point, it was suggested that Joe had forced Sophie to attend a public event before she was ready, after the birth of her second child.
Taylor Swift joins the chat
One of the reasons people assumed the “Sophie is a villain” narrative was established early on was because of Jo’s own reputation.
Jonas, in the middle, doesn’t know how to put it, but he’s had his share of bad relationships, and he usually blames himself for the breakups.
Simply put, he’s known for breaking hearts. Just ask Taylor Swift.
Taylor was probably Joe’s most famous romance before he married Sophie. (No offense, Demi Lovato!)
When they were both very young at the time, Joe famously broke up with Taylor via text message. Considering the song she wrote about him and the reputation he stuck with as an adult, he must have regretted that move for years.
So when Sophie was spotted hanging out with Taylor just a week after the divorce announcement, it was likely a huge blow to Joe’s confidence in gaining public support. Not only that, but there were reports that Sophie and her two children had actually moved into Taylor’s apartment in NYC while Joe was fighting a custody battle.

A few weeks after the divorce announcement, TMZ Sophie has filed legal documents claiming Joe is “illegally leaving the children in New York City” and she wants the children “returned” to the UK with her, according to court documents. According to court documents, Sophie and Joe have agreed to make the UK their “permanent home” with their daughters.
According to TMZSophie “somewhat reluctantly” agreed to let Joe stay with the kids while she was on tour with the Jonas Brothers, as she was filming a “very intense” and time-consuming series. They reportedly agreed that Sophie would return to New York and “pick up the kids and return to the UK.” However, the documents allege Joe “refused to give their mother her passport and refused to allow the kids to return to the UK with her.”
“Joe is seeking joint custody of the children, with both parents, and is certainly willing to allow the children to be raised in both the United States and the United Kingdom,” a spokesperson for Joe said in a response to the lawsuit filing, but the matter is far from resolved.

And so began their co-parenting life!
