According to NDTV, sources have confirmed that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is ready to replace incumbent Greg Barclay as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Barclay told ICC board members, including Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird, via video conference that he is not interested in running for the position for a third time. His decision was made after Jay Shah told him he was willing to step in to replace him in November. Shah has the support of cricket boards in England and Australia, making him a likely candidate to become the ICC chairman.
Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997-200) and Sharad Pawar (2010-2012) are the only two Indians to have previously headed the ICC. Shah, who is also the son of India’s home minister Amit Shah, will become the third chief when he officially replaces Barclay in November.
“ICC Chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed that he will not be running for a third term on the Board and will step down when his current term ends at the end of November. Barclay was appointed independent ICC Chairman in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022,” an ICC spokesperson told The Age.
“The current Board of Directors will now have until August 27, 2024, to nominate a candidate for the next Chairman, and if there are more than two candidates, an election will be held on December 1, 2024, for the term of the new Chairman to begin.”
Under ICC rules, the election of the President consists of 16 votes, and the winner now needs a simple majority of nine votes (51%). Previously, the incumbent had to secure a two-thirds majority to become President.
He enjoys a lot of goodwill with most of the 16 voting members. Shah currently has one more year left as BCCI secretary before a mandatory cooling-off period of three years from October 2025.
According to the BCCI constitution approved by the Supreme Court, an official can serve for six years before being subjected to a cooling-off period of three years. In total, a person can serve for a cumulative period of 18 years – nine years in the state association and nine years in the BCCI.
If Shah decides to move to the ICC after one year as secretary, he will have four more years with the BCCI.
At 35, he will become the youngest president in ICC history.
