He worked with the team as bowling coach during the Test tour of Bangladesh last year, the T20I series against Australia and the T20 World Cup earlier this year.
“I’m really excited to have the opportunity to play for the Black Caps again,” Oram said. “It’s a real honour to be back with a team that means so much to me and has been such a big part of my life.
“The opportunities I’ve had recently have provided me with great insight into where this team is headed, and I’m excited to continue that work going forward.
“There is a new wave of talent coming into the Black Caps bowling ranks and I hope I can share my knowledge and experience to help them achieve their best in the challenge of international cricket.”
Oram will work with a New Zealand attack that includes new faces including Ben Sears and Will O’Rourke.
He began his coaching career with New Zealand A in 2014 and has been the bowling coach for the New Zealand Women’s team since 2018. He was appointed head coach of Central Hinds last summer, where the team reached the Super Smash final. Oram was also the head coach of the Abu Dhabi T10 and bowling coach for MI Cape Town in the SA20.
“Jake is a great operator,” said manager Gary Stead. “His background as a player and his experience as a coach speak for themselves. He has a keen understanding of the international game as well as experience of franchise cricket, which will be valuable in understanding the modern player and the changing landscape of the modern game.”
Oram is expected to take up his role on October 7, just before the start of New Zealand’s three-Test series in India.
