Baku, Azerbaijan, November 25. Iranian lawmaker Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani told reporters that Iran should build an atomic bomb and withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
According to him, if Iran were to build an atomic bomb, the maximum level of pressure on the country would last for six months.
“Western countries ask why Iran is building an atomic bomb. Iran can answer that it has imposed enough sanctions on Iran and has no more sanctions to apply. Iran has no choice but to build an atomic bomb.” he said .
Ardestani noted that a majority of Iran’s population already believes that the country absolutely needs an atomic bomb.
Iran cannot afford to give up these capabilities to strengthen deterrence, he explained.
“Acquiring an atomic bomb is essential for Iran. That is why I completely agree with some of the members of parliament who have written to the Supreme National Security Council about changing the country’s nuclear doctrine,” he said.
The congressman pointed out that Iran could further develop its nuclear program by leaving the NPT.
“Iranian officials have said they will increase the number of centrifuges and use next-generation centrifuges in response to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopting a resolution against Iran. This will help increase uranium enrichment rates, which will ultimately help “The road leads to the production of atomic bombs,” he added.
For reference, the IAEA adopted a resolution against Iran on November 21 with 19 votes against Iran, 12 abstentions, and 3 votes against. The resolution called on Tehran to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on a number of issues and demanded reliable documentation of uranium residues in two undeclared areas on Iranian territory.
IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi visited Tehran on November 14, 2024 and held talks with senior Iranian officials, including President Massoud Fezeshkian.
In January 2016, Iran and the P5+1 group (US, Russia, China, UK, France, and Germany) implemented the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear program.
However, in May 2018, the United States announced its withdrawal from the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
Two years later, Iran responded to sanctions by implementing a strategic plan in the nuclear field. This decision was taken by Iran’s parliament in late 2020, resulting in the suspension of further measures under the nuclear deal and its Additional Protocol.
As a result, the IAEA faces a 20-30% reduction in its monitoring capacity.
Thirty-nine members of Iran’s parliament have petitioned Iran’s Supreme National Security Council to review Iran’s defense doctrine regarding nuclear weapons production.
