India’s star batsman Suryakumar Yadav has been spotted training ahead of the upcoming Sri Lanka tour, which begins on July 27. Ahead of the Sri Lanka tour, Suryakumar took to his official Instagram account to share a sweaty video. The 33-year-old shared a short video of himself running on the pitch before the series began. India have appointed Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the men’s T20I team for the Sri Lanka tour, while Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain of the T20I and ODI teams. Notably, Hardik, who led the T20I team on the tour after England beat India by 10 wickets in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, has been sidelined from his leadership role. He has led India in 16 T20I matches, ending with 10 wins, five losses and one draw. His win percentage stands at 62.50%.
Hardik was left out of the leadership despite his excellent performances in the T20 World Cup winning innings, scoring 144 runs in six innings at an average of 48.00, a strike rate of 151.57 and a score of 50. He also took 11 wickets in eight matches at an average of 17.36, an economy rate of 7.64 and best figures of 3/20.
Suryakumar also led India in two series immediately after losing the 50-over World Cup 2023 final to Australia, when Australia toured India and India toured South Africa. Overall, he led India in seven matches, winning five and losing two. He won the series against Australia and drew the series against South Africa.
“I give it my all every day,” Suryakumar Yadav wrote on Instagram.
India’s tour of Sri Lanka begins on July 27. The tour begins with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series starting on August 2.
The Pallekele International Stadium will host the T20I matches of the series while R Premadasa will host the 50-over matches.
The three ODIs will be played on August 2, August 4 and August 7.
Both teams will take to the field with new coaches. Legendary all-rounder Sanat Jayasurya has been appointed interim head coach of Lanka Lions, but this is also former India opener Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach, succeeding T20 World Cup winning coach Rahul Dravid.
India’s last tour of Sri Lanka for the bilateral white-ball series was back in July 2021, with Dravid guiding the Shikhar Dhawan-led team. India won the ODI series 2-1, while Sri Lanka secured the T20I series by the same margin.
