In the Boxing Day opener, Section (13th) played a closely contested match against Vannes (14th). A sold-out stadium, great weather and high stakes on the pitch all promised a great afternoon of rugby at Le Hameau.
The scoring was opened by House veteran Thibault Debaes with the first try of the match (9′ 0-7). The Great Offensive Festival begins! Joe Simmonds fakes a pass and finally gets a try to Jack Maddocks (19′ 7-7). Two penalties from Debaes and Simmonds made the score 10-10. At Breton 22m, Maddocks and Luc combined for the second try with Grandidier-Nkanang at the end (27 minutes, 17-10). Béarnais opened the scoring with a penalty from Simmonds (38′ 20-10) and a wonderful try from Luc (40′ 27-10) after Gailleton’s breakaway.
With a 27-10 lead at halftime, the section is headed in the right direction. Jack Maddocks opens the second try and the fourth for Béarnais (50′ 34-10). Barnes did not give up and made it 34-17 with Augry’s try in the 59th minute of the first half. Beka Gorgadze widened the gap again with a powerful try (64′ 41-17) after a handball penalty. Joe Simmonds broke through the defense and Axel Desperes came down to level the sixth and final Béarnais try (75′ 48-17). The Bretons’ last try changed nothing in the score (80′ 48-24) and Section won with an attacking bonus.
The 14,999 supporters in attendance at Hamo enjoyed an open and entertaining match. “The mission today was to absolutely win.
