World number one Iga Swiatek advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open by beating Anastasia Potapova 6-0 6-0 while enjoying a double bagel for breakfast in Paris.
The three-time champion arrived on court an hour early at 11am local time as organizers tried to normalize the schedule due to all the rain.
And it only took Swiatek 40 minutes to dispatch the Russian. This was one of the shortest matches in Roland Garros history.
She hit just two unforced errors to Potapova’s 19 and won 94% of her points on her first serve.
Of the 58 points played in the match, 23-year-old Potapova scored only 10.
“I was really focused. I wasn’t really looking at the score, I was focusing on the zone, and it got pretty weird, pretty fast,” Swiatek said.
“We play very early on the open roof, so it’s always a little different, but still not too warm. It doesn’t feel like summer in Europe, but we’ll see what it’s like in two days.”
Potapova was playing in the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, but Switek completely dominated the match, giving her opponent no time to breathe between goals.
Potapova attacked Swiatek’s serve at an odd opportunity to go for two winners, but a near-perfect shot from Pole left the Russian with no answer as the top seed wrapped up the first set after 19 minutes.
The crowd inside the Philippe-Chatrier court did their best to encourage Potapova, but Swiatek looked relieved and forced the Russian to make a few mistakes as the top seed consolidated her early break.
Swiatek’s only problem was the swirling wind on serve, and after days of rain the roof was finally open.
Swiatek eventually put her former junior rival Potapova out of her misery, with the world number 41 hurried off the court. Swiatek faces Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrosova In the quarterfinals.
The 2019 Roland Garros runner-up won 6-4 6-2 in the fourth round against Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic.
