Liverpool’s assault on the title this season includes a third round FA Cup tie with Accrington Stanley, which will appeal to a certain generation of supporters.
For those who don’t know, a 1980s milk advert showed two young Reds players discussing Ian Rush’s advice to drink dairy.
The premise was that anyone who didn’t drink milk would be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley, a non-league team at the time.
Then the young man’s answer was as follows: “Accrington Stanley, who are they?”Some popular answers include: “accurately!”
Now, 35 years on, we can see why our all-time leading scorer saw this as the perfect opportunity to comment on social media about the upcoming match.
The 63-year-old wrote the following on X in response to the post on the club’s official account: ‘accurately!! I look forward to a proper FA Cup match. This is what the FA Cup is all about💪🏼’
This came with a video of a Welshman saying the famous line: “accurately”In his best Scouse accent.
Ian Rush played 660 games for Liverpool but never faced Accrington Stanley.
This will be only the second time in our history that we have faced a League Two side. Their last meeting was an FA Cup third round tie at Anfield in 1956.
Arne Slot will be hoping to replicate Don Welsh’s feat that day as the Reds won 2-0 in a match in which club captain and legend Billy Liddell scored a brace.
We soon saw from the reaction of young Red Josh Woods, who was playing as a striker for the opposition, that this was going to be a landmark day for the visitors.
Our former number 9 will feature in the game and given his relationship with Mo Salah’s agent, we might just be celebrating a new contract for a man who has been tracking the goalscoring tally until then. Hopefully!
