San Antonio — On the scoreboard, Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders were blown out for Colorado.
But their lasting impact on Boulder, both on and off the field, has probably been immeasurable.
With two dynamic stars playing their final collegiate games, the 20th-ranked Buffaloes lost 36-14 to No. 17 BYU in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night.
Hunter, a Heisman Trophy winner and two-way sensation, caught four passes for a game-high 106 yards and a touchdown. Sanders’ 43-yard run cut Colorado’s deficit to 27-7 with 6:14 left in the third quarter.
The lockdown cornerback also recorded four solo tackles.
Sanders, the son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders, was 16-of-23 passing for 208 yards with two TDs and two interceptions.
Hunter and Shedeur Sanders are both expected to be selected high in next spring’s NFL Draft.
Nothing has changed in Colorado since the school hired Deion Sanders as head coach in December 2022. That was the idea.
With the hype surrounding Coach Prime’s arrival at Jackson State, the former NFL superstar brought a talented group to the Rocky Mountains. Especially his quarterback son and Hunter. Together, they helped transform the Buffaloes (9-4) from a national afterthought into one of college football’s best shows and hottest tickets.
Hunter and Shedeur Sanders certainly didn’t get the sendoff they were hoping for, but the Buffaloes are still excited about a bright future.
“I’m not looking forward to it, but I’m looking forward to it because it means they’re going to step up and soar to another level, another chapter in their lives,” Deion Sanders said before the game. “Thank you for giving us all the tools we need to succeed.”
