HONG KONG (AP) — Hundreds gathered in Hong Kong Saturday to watch the city’s first fireworks drone show as part of a campaign to raise support and awareness for panda conservation.
The 10-minute drone show featured 1,000 drones, some of which were equipped with fireworks, and flew over Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor to form the image of the city’s giant pandas.
At certain parts of the spectacle, some drones displayed fireworks while hundreds of other drones formed a slowly rotating three-dimensional panda in the sky.
Some eager spectators arrived hours before the show started to secure a good viewing spot.
Father Eddie Chow, who brought his two children to the drone show, said such shows could attract more tourists to Hong Kong.
“I think the combination of fireworks and drones is a very special topic. We need to see more of this in Hong Kong,” Chow said. He added that Saturday’s spectacle was his first experience seeing a drone show.
Other audience members, including Jodi Hung, a 20-year-old living in Hong Kong, also praised the drone show as “excellent.”
“I think the people who designed the drone show have very good skills. It’s pretty amazing. They’ve combined art and technology together,” Hung said.
Hong Kong has seen a series of activities across the city in recent weeks, including exhibitions and a panda-themed carnival, after China gifted the city a pair of giant pandas named An An and Ke Ke. It has begun. The pair’s arrival brings the total number of giant pandas in Hong Kong to six, all of whom reside at Hong Kong Ocean Park, a theme park comprised of amusement park rides and animal exhibits.
