Snapchat offers Lens to more than 80 million monthly active Skype users.
The announcement, made in June, allows regular Skype users to add Lenses to their conversations with friends and family. There are currently dozens of lenses to choose from, including sparkly beards, disco glasses, and raining hearts.
Lenses were created through Lens Studio, Snapchat’s AR authoring tool, and made available to Skype through the Camera Kit SDK, which allows partners to deploy lenses into their own apps and websites. Lens Studio and Camera Kit also power AR experiences in Microsoft Teams, SwiftKey, and Microsoft Flip.
How to use lenses in Skype
1. Open the Skype app on your Android or iOS device. Select the contact you want to chat with or open an existing conversation. Click the camera icon at the bottom right of the screen.
2. Select the smiley face icon to the right of the Capture button to see all the fun lenses available for Skype.
3. Once you find the one you want to use, click the check mark at the bottom right of the screen. To record a video of yourself using the lens, press and hold the capture button. Once recording is complete, click on the recording image to review the video and edit it as desired.
4. When you are satisfied with the recording, select the Send icon at the bottom right of the screen. (Otherwise, you can re-shoot and re-record!)
5. Your video will appear in chat. Hit the Send button and the video with the lens will be sent to your contacts.
