New iMac owners, take note: Your M4 iMac comes upside down in its original box. If you open the box incorrectly, something unexpected may happen. Your new computer may fall on the floor on the first day like mine did. did it
Don’t be fooled by the picture on the front of the package, which shows the iMac’s base at the bottom. To avoid disaster, follow these instructions on how to open your iMac box.
iMac’s misleading box design
Apple is known for its attention to detail and quirky packaging. Designers want to create a good first impression with “surprise and delight,” which starts with the retail experience itself.
However, several design cues in the new M4 iMac box may cause you to open the box the wrong way.
- The front photo shows the iMac with the top on top and the bottom on the bottom. Often Apple products are arranged in boxes to match their orientation in photos at actual size. You could be forgiven for thinking that the iMac matches the picture.
- The handle on the top of the box allows you to lower the box vertically.
- The tape that holds the box closed is located in the top rear corner and must be opened by pulling on the top of the box first. It is easiest to open the box when it is upright.
How to open M4 iMac the right way
There’s a right way to open the box of your new iMac (the one Apple has been using since the 2021 design was released). Lay the box flat on the floor so it opens like a pizza box.
Otherwise, if you try to open it upright like I did, you will be in for a real surprise. When you pull on the top of the box, the front of the box opens forward like an oven. If you happen to look closely inside the product, you may find that the iMac is upside down. If you, like me, are too busy filming unboxings and taking pictures for reviews, you might miss it.
Inside the box is the iMac’s heavy aluminum legs on top. If you open the box while it’s upright, the iMac will drop down as soon as you pull on the inner cardboard padding.
Fortunately, my iMac came out without a scratch even though the floor was hardwood. The desk I put my iMac on is a standard 30 inches tall (luckily it’s not a standing desk). The iMac’s fall was also broken by the box lid protruding from the desk, which certainly reduced the impact.
Needless to say I was surprised, ~ no Very happy.
