Vice President Kamala Harris just sent one of the most empathetic emails of her career.
Although the email was merely a fundraiser for the 2024 presidential election, Harris captivated readers by reminding them that her reaction to former President Donald Trump’s 2016 victory involved orange snacks.
“It was bittersweet,” she wrote in an email Friday. “When I went up on stage to give my acceptance speech to represent the California Senate, I ripped up my notebook. I just said, ‘We’re going to fight.’
“Then I went home and sat on the couch with a family-size bag of Nacho Doritos.”
“I did not share the chips with anyone,” Harris continued in the fundraising email. It wasn’t (my husband) Doug (Emhoff) either. I watched TV with great shock and bewilderment.”
While supposed Harris voters on social media sympathized, others pointed to the proliferation of product placement in this year’s race: Trump’s running mate JD Vance has now repeatedly praised Diet Mountain Dew, and Trump himself was distracted by a box of Cheerios on Thursday.
Nonetheless, the email resonated with those who remembered Hillary Clinton’s 2016 defeat.
“This is so true. I was curled up on the couch with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and a bourbon,” wrote one user on X (formerly Twitter), while another posted, “I think we can all relate to that feeling. And a bag of Doritos was healthier than a bottle of wine that night.”
Harris has shared the Doritos story before, telling it almost verbatim during a 2019 appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
Harris is well known for his love of Doritos.
Not only has the vice president been photographed munching on the cheese-flavored chips before, but he also said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in 2019 that Doritos were his favorite snack, and that his busy schedule often forces him to rely on portable meals.
“I love vegetables,” Harris said at the time. “I like to eat with a knife and fork whenever I can. I say that because on the campaign trail these days, I eat in the car a lot, ripping open a box, and (choosing) something I can eat with one hand.”
