Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) criticized Donald Trump for wanting to turn his Cabinet into a “junk drawer” during a speech on the House floor Wednesday, criticizing the president-elect for assuming the highest role in government.
“I mean, being a billionaire who abuses women or is out of touch seems to be a requirement to be in the Trump White House,” said McGovern, who previously called Trump’s choice “beyond crazy.”
“What’s next?” He added: “Are we going to replace FBI background checks with Fox News screen tests?”
McGovern took aim at Trump over the president’s selection of several men accused of sexual harassment, including former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, to join his administration. Trump is reportedly considering replacing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (Republican) as Secretary of Defense amid growing controversy.
“I mean, this guy is probably going to drop out for a while. Apparently he was drinking at work and paying to cover up the sexual assault allegations. Even his mom doesn’t like him,” McGovern said of the criticism Hegseth and his mother leveled in 2018.
Early in his remarks, McGovern scolded House Republicans for “messing up” all of their “priorities.”
“What I mean is, instead of people talking about the cost of groceries, people are talking about which bathroom they should use.” McGovern spoke as he criticized Rep. Nancy Mace, R-N.C., for allegedly posting hundreds of social media posts about her anti-transgender stance. A toilet crusade will take place within 72 hours.
He declared that the Republican Party wants politicians to “stop caring about those at the top.”
He added, “But look at who Donald Trump is empowering in the new administration.”
McGovern later sarcastically called Trump’s nomination of Howard Lutnick, the billionaire CEO of investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald and co-chairman of the transition team, to be Secretary of Commerce a “big surprise.”
“I don’t think this person has the ability to understand what regular people in our area do,” McGovern said.

“I’m his educational secretary.” He continued: “Another billionaire. What are her qualifications? She ran WWE. I think some schools have wrestling programs. “I think it would be fun if it wasn’t so sad.”
