Hosts Germany opened the European Championships with a 5-1 win over 10-man Scotland on Friday.
Goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala put Germany firmly in control after less than 20 minutes, with the duo becoming the team’s youngest scorers in Euros history.
The first half ended badly for Scotland when defender Ryan Porteous was sent off and Kai Havertz converted the spot-kick.
Scotland, who had not scored for much of the game, gave their rowdy fans something to cheer about when an own goal from German defender Antonio Rudiger bundled the ball into the back of the net.
Coach Steve Clark’s team was eliminated from Group A and will need to perform better against Hungary and Switzerland to reach the knockout stages for the first time.
Germany, tied on points with Spain, are looking to win a record fourth European Championship title.
