In a recent stream, Seth ‘Scump’ Abner addressed the rumors of Matthew ‘FormaL’ Piper possibly returning to Call of Duty esports. The former Call of Duty World Champion won the World Championship in HCS after retiring from the title in 2021 and returning to Halo to reboot the competitive ecosystem.
The future of FormaL is now unfolding. He’s currently competing in the Halo World Championship tournament in Seattle, but Scump’s recent comments suggest he may be preparing to return to Call of Duty.
the king is back
In July, FormaL revealed that he planned to play Black Ops 6 at a professional level, which fits very well with what Scump just said during his stream.
FormaL gave us a hint, he might come to play COD, we don’t know what’s going on with FormaL… confident. If this is FormaL’s last event for Halo – I don’t know if he wants to play COD or what – and if he gets there and wins the damn thing, talk about the scene.
If FormaL wins the World Championship tournament in Seattle, he will further solidify himself as one of the best controller-based esports players of all time. He is one of only two competitors in the world to secure World Championship titles in two games: Halo and Call of Duty.
The Halo esports ecosystem isn’t in the best shape, so you might be expecting FormaL to move on to greener pastures. Last year, the operators of the Call of Duty League made some positive changes that went down well with the competitive community, so there are high expectations that next season will be a big one.
In that sense, it is not safe to assume that FormaL can get back into the league and establish themselves. Since he hasn’t competed in over three years, he’s probably a better fit for the Challengers until he proves he still has what it takes to succeed.
